Oil on canvas portrait of the New York pilot schooner No. 13, the Caldwell H. Colt. The painting is signed and dated lower left: "C. Freitag Brooklyn 1890". It depicts the vessel under full sail. The number 13 is painted in large numbers on the mainsail of the rear mast. The sail seams and reef points are clearly visible.
The hull is painted with great accuracy and is typical in design of the New York pilot boats of that era with the plumb bow and rounded stern. The deck detail is well rendered featuring skylight, deckhouses, companionway and sailors.
Flying from the gaff of the rear mast is an American flag. Flying from the peak of the foremast is a blue flag with a running horse. Flying from the top of the rear mast is a banner which states: "Caldwell H. Colt" There is a quarterboard mounted near the bow with the printed name "C. H. Colt".
The water is painted in a very artistic style which we have seen in other Freitag paintings, such as in the schooner yacht
Siren painted by Freitag in 1888. To the left of the
C. H. Colt at the horizon is a transitional steamsail vessel with four masts and two stacks.
To the right is a square rigged ship heading towards the
C. H. Colt. To the right and along the horizon below the boom, is a steam yacht and to its right is a large two masted schooner yacht which appears to be flying the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) burgee. The sky is bright blue with scattered white clouds.
