SE122 - Watercolor on Paper
by Frederick S. Cozzens (1856 - 1928)

SE122 - Watercolor on Paper by Frederick S. CozzensWatercolor on paper by Frederick Schiller Cozzens. Signed lower left: "Fred. S. Cozzens 86". The painting depicts Mr. E. A. Seacomb´s steam yacht, Whisper and his sailing yacht Psyche.

This is the largest, most colorful and most detailed Cozzen´s painting we have viewed. The two masted steam yacht, Whisper, is painted with outstanding detail. One can see the individual bolts on the boiler below the stack. The skylights are seen in a an open position. The lifeboats are hanging on davits and one can view the individual ribs.

There are three crewmen working the boat near the bow, and the owner and family are at the stern looking at and pointing to the five figures on board the Psyche, which is crossing Whisper´s bow. The Psyche has a beautiful hourglass stern and is carrying a pair of tenders. Her sails are beautifully painted and look very realistic. Both of these vessels are owned by Mr. Seacomb and are flying his private signal along with the American yacht ensign. To the left is a spit of land with a few homes. It is believed that one of these homes belongs to Mr. Seacomb.

Accompanying the painting is the original hand sewn private signal flag from Whisper. The flag is signed: "THE S.McFADDEN CO. MAKERS. 198 HUDSON ST. N.Y. P. S. 2". The flag is framed in a period gold leaf frame.
