SE119 - Pair of Engraved Scrimshaw Whale Teeth

SE119 - Pair of Engraved Scrimshaw Whale Teeth Exceptionally fine pair of engraved scrimshaw whale teeth. The obverse of the first tooth depicts Neptune seated in a shell holding a trident in his right hand and a chart in his left hand. Below him is a long haired mermaid. To the left of the mermaid are a pair of horses, one being held by a male figure blowing a horn. The reverse of the tooth is a beautifully detailed depiction of a first rate ship under full sail.

The obverse of the second tooth depicts Britannia in a seated position holding a trident in her right hand and a shield in her left. Behind her is large British flag with a lion below. To the left of Britannia is a British navy ship with two rows of cannons. SE119 - Pair of Engraved Scrimshaw Whale Teeth

The reverse of this tooth depicts a transitional steamsail sidewheeler. Above Neptune and Britannia are engraved crowns. Each tooth has a Greek key pattern along the bottom base.

The quality of the engraving in these teeth is exceptional as is the subject matter. Each tooth has a paper collection label, one with the number "18" and the other with the number "19". English. Circa 1840.
