SE113 - Daniel Quare Portable Barometer

SE113 - Daniel Quare Portable Barometer Exceptionally rare and important walnut and gild brass portable barometer. The barometer has a glazed gild brass rectangular head. On opposite sides of the mercury column are vertical engraved silver scales.

There is a slot on the inside edge of each scale through which the geared vernier pointers ride. SE113 - Daniel Quare Portable BarometerAt each corner, at the top of the head are turned urn and ball shaped finials. These finials, when rotated, drive the gear mechanism operating the vernier scales. SE113 - Daniel Quare Portable Barometer

Separating the two geared finials is a larger two part finial. Below the head is a three sided gild brass square shaped plate.

This plate and the head of the finial above are beautifully engraved. The gild metal parts are mounted on a walnut backing and base. The wood base is square shaped and rounds towards the edges.

The base then turns into a stop-fluted column, above a turned brass disk, above a rectangular walnut base with step molded top and bottom, above the collapsible gild brass lets. Each of the four legs is beautifully decorated including a male face at the center. English. Circa 1695.
