SE111 - Painting of Anglo-American by Robert Salmon (1775 - 1843)
Oil on canvas by Robert Salmon, English, signed and dated lower right: "R S 1825". In the foreground, there is a small two masted vessel which has just been pulled on shore. There is a standing figure by the foremast, gathering the sail and three other figures in the boat. To the left of center, there is a stone wharf projecting into the water. Alongside is a sloop with various figures onboard. To the left of the wharf is a somewhat larger two masted vessel with an English flag. To the right of the painting is a steep rocky cliff with a figure standing at its top. At the horizon near the center of the painting and moving to the right are other mountain like forms. The sky has billowing clouds with pink and purple highlights. The rendering of the vessels, figures, water and sky are typical of Salmon´s style.
